24 Original recording, Soundtrack
A.R.Rahman (Artist)

The soundtrack album and film score are composed by A. R. Rahman. The lyrics to the songs are written by Madhan Karky and Vairamuthu. Madhan Karky confirmed his association in September 2015. Recording of one of the tracks written by Vairamuthu was completed by February 2015. He has penned three songs for the soundtrack. In an interview with The Hindu, Suriya told that recording of one more track was completed by September 2015.According to lyricist Madhan Karky, for the track "Naan Un", Rahman had composed a tune and wanted him to write something. He came up with the lines - "Naan Un Azhaginile Deivam Unarugiren". Rahman usually reads something for inspiration before composing the tunes and for this particular situation of composing the track, he had picked up a random page from a book and the lines he read there were: "In your beauty I see the manifestation of God" which translates back to "Naan Un Azhaginile Deivam Unarugiren". Karky noted this co-incidence on composing the track.

Ghayal Once Again

Ajay Mehra (from previous Ghayal-1990), after finishing off his life sentence, starts a newspaper called Satyakam. Still dealing with the haunting trauma of losing his loved ones, Ajay manages to make a credible name for himself in investigative journalism. Working with a strange team of RTI activists, ex-criminals and ilk and even stranger ways of unearthing and presenting truth, Ajay Mehra has earned quite a fan following among the youths, who finds his fearless and unforgiving approach in dealing with all kinds of sociopaths very inspiring. Among his die hard fans are these four teenagers who happened to have received bravery medals from him once. These four friends once out on photography expedition, accidentally record a murder on a camera. The footage turns out to be explosive as it clearly shows two of the city’s most powerful peoples (an industrialist and a minister) involved in the murder of a RTI activist associated with Satyakam. Amidst family pressure they hands over the footage to a corporate lawyer (father of one of them) expecting him to bring the mighty sociopaths to justice. The lawyer instead strikes a deal with the mighty ones. When the kids get to know of this, feel betrayed. Luckily they had a backup copy of that footage with them. Unaware of the fact that they were all now under the scanner of that powerful industrialist’s surveillance army, they call up Ajay Mehra informing him about the murder & their wish to give that footage to him. The surveillance engineers intercept this call and the industrialist unleashes all his power to stop the kids from reaching Ajay Mehra. The minister too gets involved in the preventive attacks by paralyzing Ajay Mehra’s media network through simultaneous raids by various government agencies. Owing to their immense control over the media and government machinery, the evil duo manages to portray Ajay Mehra and the four kids as the enemy of the state on the run- within a span of just few hours. As if it was not enough Ajay Mehra is left to deal with the families of the four kids too, who feel that Ajay has instigated their kids to land up in a dangerous predicament like that. The matters get even worse when the psychological demons of his traumatic past come alive before him, revealing a truth that blows his senses away. Amidst these hostilities, fighting with people who literally own the world he was in, Ajay rises to fight back with power that only an injured tiger (Ghayal Sher) of the legends possess.

Bajirao Mastani by Ranveer Singh

Bajirao Mastani by Ranveer Singh

Bajirao Mastani by Ranveer Singh

Bajirao , who fought over 41 major battles and many others, is reputed never to have lost a battle. Bajirao is described as "RANMARD" a man of the battlefield. Bajirao said to his brother "Remember that night has nothing to do with sleep. It was created by God, to raid territory held by your enemy. The night is your shield, your screen against the cannons and swords of vastly superior enemy forces. " Bajirao was a heaven born cavalry leader. In the long and distinguished galaxy of Peshwas, Bajirao was unequalled for the daring and originality of his genius and the volume and value of his achievements.

In 16th century India, an undefeated warrior, Bajirao Ballal was bestowed with the title of Peshwa, or Prime Minister, by the Hindu Maratha King Shahu. He became the greatest weapon of the Maratha Empire, which he expanded through non-stop war campaigns 8 months of the year.

While camped with his men one night, a rider descended on Bajirao with an urgent request to save Bundelkhand, a fort belonging to another Hindu king, which was under siege by the Moguls, Bajirao’s greatest opponents. Bajirao refused initially, but was mesmerized upon seeing the rider, a beautiful girl, moreover a Rajput princess who rode for days to seek out his help. Princess Mastani was the daughter of a Hindu King, Raja Chattrasal. Her mother, Roohani Begum was Muslim. Mastani was used to getting what she desired, and she desired Bajirao.

If Bajirao was the weapon of the Maratha Empire, his wife Kashi was the salve. She possessed a soft, soothing nature and was utterly devoted to Bajirao. She was adored by not just by the Peshwa family but also by the Maratha people. She, too, was a woman of great beauty, but an upholder of convention, in contrast to Mastani. Despite Bajirao’s best efforts, he could not deny his love for Mastani, who swore herself to him from the day he presented her his dagger as a souvenir. She pursued him to the Peshwa palace at Pune, where Bajirao’s family, led by his mother Radha, promptly sent her to the courtesan quarters. Bajirao faced great opposition from his family, the Maratha people and the religious leaders, the Brahmin priests. Every attempt was made to render Bajirao inaccessible to Mastani, but they always found their way to each other, finally paying the ultimate price in the name of love.

Bajirao-Mastani immortalizes the journey of star-crossed soul mates against the backdrop of war and intrigue in one of the greatest eras of Indian history.

Dr.Rao (Girih Karnad) is a Vetinary doc, who comes to this village with the aim of starting a Milk Co-operative society for the welfare of the villagers. But the wealthy businessman Mishraji (Amrish Puri) and Sarpanch (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) are unhappy about this. How Dr.rao succeeds in his mission to make the villagers self reliant, with the help of Bindu (Smit Patil) and Bhola (Naseeruddin shah) is worth watching.

IMDB User Reviews:

Manthan is an extraordinarily powerful and intense depiction of social change. As it has been 15 years since I've seen this film, my recollection of details may not be completely accurate; but the story tells the struggle of Indian dairy farmers to gain a fairer share of the proceeds of their labor from the larger milk-processing companies to whom they sell their raw milk. While my recollection of factual details about this movie is limited, I do recall vividly the strong emotional and artistic impact Manthan had on me. It should be noted that director Benegal also made Ankur (The Seedling) which, with a completely different story, also incarnates the painful social changes India is undergoing as it moves from a more to a less feudal social structure -- and in both movies dealing with these themes without preachiness or pronounced ideological heavyhandedness.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Varghese Kurien left for his heavenly abode on 09th September, 2012 and I am late in paying my tribute to him. I am paying my tribute through this review which is of a movie whose Dr. Kurien himself was a part of.

Hailed as the Milkman of India, Dr. Kurien was the pioneer of White Revolution in India which not only substantially increased milk production in India but also systematized its collection and distribution and a network of milk cooperative societies came into existence through the relentless efforts of Dr. Kurien. This compaign known as Operation Flood, created dairy cooperatives all over rural India ensuring that the milk producers get the right price of the product and are saved from the exploitation of the middlemen.

However no good work could be (and can be) done smoothly in the feudalistic and exploitative set up of India. And that's shown in director Shyam Benegal's movie - Manthan (1976) whose story was given by Dr. Kurien himself. Renowned playwright - Vijay Tendulkar wrote its screenplay and legendary Shaayar - Kaifi Aazmi wrote its dialogs.

Appearing to be inspired by the real life experience of Dr. Kurien himself, the story of Manthan (the churning) starts with the arrival of a vet, Dr. Rao (Girish Karnaad) in a small village, Sanganva (Gujarat). He has been deputed by the government to start a dairy cooperative in that area. His team includes Deshmukh (Mohan Aagashe), Chandavarkar (Anant Naag) etc. Quite naturally, the local dairy owner, Mishra (Amrish Puri) who also happens to be the money-lender of the village, is not finding this activity as compatible for his exploitative business. He buys the milk from the poor milkmen of the village at very less rates and makes exorbitant profit which is now in danger due to the forming of the cooperative society in the village. On the other hand, the sarpanch, i.e., the head of the local governing body of the village (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), sees the cooperative as another means to further his power and awe in the village. The major chunk of the village population is made by the lower caste people (HARIJANS) and they look upon not only these high profile exploiters but also the urban incomers as their enemies only, mighty but unreliable. Their leader is a good-hearted but arrogant and short-tempered youth, Bhola (Nasiruddin Shah).

Quite naturally, the path ahead for the idealist young hero, Dr. Rao is thorny and stony. But he decides not to compromise with his ideals and not to get awed by the might of the opposers. He considers all human-beings as equal and endeavours to involve the HARIJAN milkmen in the cooperative society so that the purpose of the cooperative movement is served in the real sense. Bhopa first misunderstands him but once seeing his pious intentions, he joins the society with his caste brethren. Dr. Rao also gets ample moral support from a sensible and mature milkwoman - Bindu (Smita Patil). However where on one hand, Mishra is conspiring against Dr. Rao and the cooperative society, the sarpanch after losing the election of the chairman of the cooperative society to a HARIJAN youth, goes against them on the other. Mishra gets the support of the drunkard and wicked husband of Bindu in his evil scheme and he makes many moves simultaneously to jolt Dr. Rao and his endeavours and grind his own axe. The sarpanch finally arranges the calling back of Dr. Rao to his original place through a government order. However by this time, the poor as well as the oppressed masses have identified their collective strength through the inspiration of Bhola and they do not allow the cooperative society to lose its existence despite the return of Dr. Rao and his team.

Manthan is technically superior and the complete rural milieu has got enlivened on the screen. Several real villagers have also acted in the movie. Every frame (and every character) appears to be real. The length of the movie is not much but whatever is there, the narrative proves to be thoroughly engrossing for the viewer. There is no laxity or boredom anywhere.

Music director Vanraj Bhatia has made background score according to the mood of the movie. There is only one song - Mero Gaam Katha Paare, Jahaan Doodh Ki Nadiya Baahe in the movie for which Preeti Saagar won the Filmfare award for the best female playback singer. It's a Gujarati lyric penned by Niti Saagar. And now this famous song with a clip from the movie is always used as a part of the advertisement of Amul.

The famous theatre personality, playwright and actor - Girish Karnaad has excelled in the lead role of Dr. Rao. The film also features another pillar of Indian theatre - Mohan Aagashe. Many actors who were introduced to the Indian cine-audience through the parallel cinema movement of the seventies are there in this movie, viz. Smita Patil, Nasiruddin Shah, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Anant Naag etc. are there and everyone of them has left his / her mark through admirable performance. Late Amrish Puri with his peculiar dialog delivery amuses the audience despite being in a negative role.

As rightly said by Bhola to Dr. Rao in the movie that it's easy to talk about ideals (or begin with them) but the real achievement is to stick to them even when everything goes against the protagonist. The idealism of most of the idealists loses its steam and even its breath midway because they are not strong from inside to endure the adverse times. All the same, the ending scene of Manthan declares loud and clear that an idealist may lose, the ideal doesn't.
